Life in lockdown: the experiences and effects on special education and pupils

Findings from our research started in June 2020 to explore the impact of lockdown - and the changes it brought about - on special education providers and families of pupils with EHCPs. We will set out how special schools and colleges made vital decisions during this time, how and to what extent families were supported and the lasting effects on pupils and the sector. There are clear lessons to learn about what did and did not work, including around home learning and provision of non-educational support, as well as issues around disparity between pupils with and without SEND, and the way special educational provision is too often 'forgotten about'.
