Balancing the Curriculum: Creativity, Arts, Culture and Disadvantage

This talk addresses the place of creativity, arts and culture in primary education. It is argued that over two decades the national curriculum and assessment system in England has resulted in a primary curriculum which is neither broad nor balanced. Evidence to support this argument focuses on areas such as the neglect of arts subjects; the narrow focus on 'core' subjects; and the lack of attention to creativity across the whole curriculum. New research evidence will be presented that points to the possibilities for a better future for England's children through the development of a new national curriculum and assessment system.
